What is Safeguarding and Child Protection?

Atlantic Academy recognises its moral and statutory responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of all students. We endeavour to provide a safe and welcoming environment where children are respected and valued. We are alert to the signs of abuse and neglect, and follow our procedures to ensure that children receive effective support, protection and justice.

When we think about protecting children from harm, we refer to two measures:

Safeguarding is the action taken to promote the welfare of all children and keep them from harm. Safeguarding is different from Child protection.

The NSPCC provides a good summary of what safeguarding is:

Child protection

Child protection is the specific action taken to protect individual children who have been identified as suffering, or likely to suffer significant harm.
